Gisele Bennett, Martin J. Booth and Caroline Boudoux elected to Optica Board of Directors

Optica’s membership selected Bennett, Booth and Boudoux during the 2023 election

WASHINGTON—Gisele Bennett, Martin J. Booth and Caroline Boudoux have each been connected to Optica (formerly OSA), Advancing Optics and Photonics Worldwide, since graduate school. Now, they will sit on Optica’s global Board of Directors.

Optica’s membership elected Bennett (MEPSS LLC), an Optica Fellow and Senior Member, to serve as 2024 Vice President. Booth (University of Oxford), also an Optica Fellow and Senior Member, and Boudoux (Polytechnique Montreal) were elected as 2024-2026 Directors-at-Large. The 2023 election results were announced today at the Optica Annual Business Meeting, held during the Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science Conference, 9-12 October 2023.

“Gisele’s contributions to Optica cannot be overstated: since joining Optica in 1988, her volunteer service has impacted every corner of the Society,” said Elizabeth Rogan, Optica CEO. “Gisele brings perspectives from academia, as a former Associate Vice President for Research at Georgia Tech, and industry as a founding member of MEPSS, a startup company. We are excited to welcome her to the Optica Board.”

Gisele Bennett received a PhD in Electrical Engineering and a certificate in Management of Technology from Georgia Tech in 1995. After holding positions including Senior VP for Strategic and Research Initiatives and Professor at Florida Tech, she returned to Georgia Tech. There, she was the Regents’ Researcher (a position nominated by the President and approved by the Board of Regents), Associate Vice President for Research, Faculty Integration, and Professor in the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering. She also managed a rapidly growing, interdisciplinary applied research lab at the Georgia Tech Research Institute, making contributions to the areas of optical imaging systems, EO modeling, and simulation, LIDAR development for sensing, Active-EO Systems development, and IoT sensor system development.

Bennett is a member of the Army Science Board and on the Board of Trustees for Riverside Research Institute. She is a Fellow with Optica (formerly OSA) and SPIE and a Senior Member of Optica and the IEEE. Her current volunteer activities for Optica include serving as the editor-in-chief for Applied Optics, a member of the Strategic Planning Committee, and a member of the Board of Editors. She served on the Optica Board as an elected Director at Large from 2018–2020 and on many other boards and committees within Optica.

Martin J. Booth is Professor of Optical and Photonic Engineering at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom. He holds a Masters of Engineering and a PhD from Oxford, completing doctoral research on Adaptive Optics for Confocal Microscopy. He was named Deputy Head of Department in 2021. Booth is a Fellow of Optica, SPIE, and the Institute of Physics. He has made many contributions to the optics and photonics community. He was an associate editor of Optics Express (2007-2013) and Biomedical Optics Express (2010-2013). He was editor (2013-2015) and then editor-in-chief (2015-2021) of Optics Communications. He has served on numerous conference committees, including Optica/OSA’s Adaptive Optics, Novel Techniques in Microscopy, CLEO Biophotonics, and CLEO Europe. He also has a dedication to the next generation of optics researchers, mentoring over 50 researchers and post-docs who have moved onto positions in academia and industry.

Caroline Boudoux is a leader in the field of biomedical optics, a Professor of Engineering Physics at Polytechnique Montréal, Canada, with appointments as a researcher at Sainte-Justine Hospital, University of Montréal's Biomedical Engineering Institute, and Quebec's Center for Optics, Photonics, and Lasers (COPL). She holds awards for her work in both research and teaching. She has been an invited speaker at Optica meetings since 2005, and she is further contributing to the organization of the Biophotonics Congress as its Vice-Chair for 2023 and General Chair for 2025. In addition, she represents the Biomedical Optics portfolio at Optica's Board of Meetings Committee, to students in the Amplify program and at IONS.
