High-Power Monochromatic Photovoltaic Conversion and Remote Optical Transmission

Hosted By: Optics for Energy Technical Group

28 July 2023 10:00 - 11:00

Eastern Time (US & Canada) (UTC - 04:00)

High-power optical transmission (HPOT) is attracting huge interest from both the scientific and industrial communities due to its large number of potential applications and future perspectives. This technology consists of the use of a monochromatic light source to power supply a remote system by using a photovoltaic (PV) converter. HPOT offers a technological paradigm shift with the possibility of transmitting kilowatts over several kilometers without the use of wires. On the other hand, HPOT is still under development, and important efforts are still needed to improve the efficiency and the amount of power to be transmitted.

This webinar hosted by the Optics for Energy Technical Group will mainly focus on the investigation of the most suitable PV materials to improve the performance of HPOT systems under a wide range of scenarios. The importance of parameters such as the band-gap or the series resistance of the PV materials, as well as the attenuation of the atmosphere with the distance will be discussed by Dr. Eduardo Fernández.

What You Will Learn:
• The impact of parameters such as the band-gap, light intensity, uniformity or series resistance on the monochromatic photovoltaic conversion.
• The effects of the attenuation of the atmosphere on monochromatic light and the optical wavelengths to improve the performance of HPOT systems.

Who Should Attend:
• PhDs and early careers researchers interested in understanding the main physical phenomena involved in monochromatic photovoltaic conversion and remote optical transmission.
• Researchers and professionals aimed to know about novel applications of PV materials and about the potential of HPOT technology.
