Brillouin Microscopy for Biomedical Applications

Hosted By: Therapeutic Laser Applications Technical Group

01 August 2023 11:00 - 12:00

Eastern Time (US & Canada) (UTC - 04:00)

Brillouin microscopy is an emerging optical technique for quantifying the 3D mechanical properties of materials in a non-contact, non-perturbative, and label-free manner. Over the past 15 years, the feasibility and potential of this new technique in biomedical field have been extensively demonstrated, and Brillouin technology is rapidly recognized as a complementary tool to conventional methods for mechanical testing.

In this webinar hosted by the Therapeutic Laser Applications Technical Group, Jitao Zhang will discuss the innovation of the technology and the potential application in biomedical research such as cancer metastasis and embryo development.

Subject Matter Level: Intermediate - Assumes basic knowledge of the topic

What You Will Learn:
• Basics of Brillouin microscopy
• Applications of Brillouin microscopy in Biology

Who Should Attend:
• Scientists, researchers, and professors in the fields of biomedical engineering, biophotonics, medicine, and biology
• Postdoctoral fellows
• Graduate and undergraduate students

About the Presenter: Jitao Zhang from Wayne State University

Jitao is an Assistant Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Department at Wayne State University. Before that, he was a research assistant professor in Fischell Department of Bioengineering at the University of Maryland, College Park, where he also received his postdoc training from 2015 to 2018. He obtained the Ph.D. degree in optical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing China. He has authored more than 35 articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited two book chapters. Jitao has been a recipient of several awards, including the Doctoral Dissertation Excellence Award, the Marcy Speer Award for postdoc, and the NIH K25 award. He has 3 US patents granted on Brillouin technology.
