Next Generation LiDAR for High-Priority Industrial Metrology Applications

Hosted By: Lasers in Manufacturing Technical Group

29 August 2023 10:00 - 11:00

Eastern Time (US & Canada) (UTC - 04:00)

In this webinar, Dr. Hollie Wright will discuss her optical metrology technique, Two-Photon Dual-Comb LiDAR and her plans for its implementation into high-priority industrial metrology applications.

The optical metrology techniques currently available to industry lie at two ends of a scale: interferometry-based techniques offering high-resolution over limited ranges; and LiDAR-based techniques offering low-resolution over large ranges. Dual-comb ranging has the power to fill this performance gap, but the technique is quite complex. Two-Photon Dual-Comb LiDAR is a simplified variation on the technique which offers comparable performance to the original dual-comb technique, with much lower costs and data requirements. The simplicity of the system will make it possible to finally employ dual-comb ranging as an industrial application.

One intended application is the real-time position tracking of manufacturing machines. Accuracy at speed is the key to zero-scrap, cost-effective manufacturing across all sectors. By providing real-time positional tracking, Two-Photon Dual-Comb LiDAR could enable corrections to compensate for positional errors.

Dr. Wright will discuss how Two-Photon Dual-Comb LiDAR works and the many advantages over existing optical metrology techniques. She will share latest results, including some unpublished work. Finally she will discuss the potential applications of her technique, including the real-time positional tracking of manufacturing mac

Subject Matter Level: Intermediate - Assumes basic knowledge of the topic

What You Will Learn:
• The principles of Two-Photon Dual-Comb LiDAR in more detail than has been provided in journal/conference papers.
• The unique advantages Two-Photon Dual-Comb LiDAR holds over alternative technologies.
• Plans to integrate Two-Photon Dual-Comb LiDAR into manufacturing applications.

About the Presenter: Hollie Wright from Heriot-Watt University

Dr. Hollie Wright completed her undergraduate studies in physics at the University of St Andrews. She graduated with a MPhys in 2016 and immediately joined Prof Derryck Reid's group at Heriot-Watt University. With sponsorship from Renishaw, she conducted a postgraduate research project developing dual-comb ranging for industrial applications. The resulting technology, 'Two-Photon Dual-Comb LiDAR' is the subject of a shared patent between Renishaw and Heriot-Watt University. After graduating with an EngD in Applied Photonics in 2021, Dr Wright has remained at Heriot-Watt as a postdoc. She is continuing the research with sponsorship from Renishaw.
